Steel Making Industry in South Korea— Technologies, Products and Green Initiatives

November 5, 2024

The steel-making industry is a cornerstone of global manufacturing, playing a vital role in everything from construction to automotive production. In South Korea, this sector has not only been a driving force behind the country’s rapid industrialization but has also earned a reputation for producing some of the highest quality steel in the world. As the industry faces increasing global competition and environmental challenges, South Korean steelmakers are innovating at an impressive pace.

This blog post delves into the current status of the steel industry in Korea, compares it to global trends, highlights the exceptional quality of Korean steel, explores the latest technologies in use, and examines next-generation carbon reduction initiatives that are shaping the future of steel production.

Current Status of the Steel Industry

South Korea’s steel industry is dominated by a few key players, with POSCO and Hyundai Steel leading the charge. POSCO, established in 1968, is one of the world’s largest steel producers. The company has consistently ranked among the top global steelmakers, emphasizing sustainability and efficiency in its operations. Hyundai Steel, a subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Group, also plays a significant role in the industry, focusing on high-strength steel products for the automotive sector and advanced construction materials.

Other notable companies include Dongkuk Steel, which specializes in steel plates and bars, and SeAH Steel, known for its diverse product offerings, including pipes and tubes. Together, these companies not only contribute significantly to Korea’s economy but also enhance its reputation as a leader in the global steel market.

Quality of Korean Steel, Related Technologies and Products

South Korean steel is known for its reliable quality and rigorous quality control process, thanks to continuous innovation in the steel mill manufacturing equipment and inspection technology sectors in Korea.

The following manufacturers under US Korea Hotlink work closely with major Korean and Japanese steel mills in supplying equipment and products, and are exporting to the US.

1. Cast and Forged Steel Rolls

  • We specialize in providing custom-forged and cast steel rolls for steel mills, steel processing lines, and EV battery manufacturing lines.
  • With patented heat treatment and coating technologies, our steel rolls are wear-resistant which reduces replacement frequency.
  • Our steel roll manufacturing plants are ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified, and can support high volume projects – we produce 400 tons of work rolls and arbor rolls every month for Hyundai Steel.

South Korea’s transition into Green Steel

With the growing concern of global warming, the steel making industry is facing increasing scrutiny from advocates and regulators to reduce carbon emission. South Korea, with its prominent steel making sector as well as flourishing R&D landscape, is at the forefront of this green transition for the steel industry.

POSCO has announced its goal for net-zero carbon 2025, and introduced development of hydrogen reduction steelmaking process and technologies.

FINEX is a breakthrough technology which produces hot metal using fine iron ore and non-coaking coal, replacing the sintering and coking process. Jointly developed by POSCO and Primetals Technologies, there are currently two FINEX plants in operation.

To further build on the success of FINEX, POSCO is developing HyREX—using hydrogen instead of coal as the reducing agent to convert fine iron ore into Direct Reduced Iron (DRI), which is then charged into an Electric Smelting Furnace (ESF) to produce hot metal.

To ensure that HyREX achieves near-zero emission, the technology will use green hydrogen and renewable energy.
